Jesus is Our Savior!

Bom Dia Meninos!!!
You guys all rock!!! I love you all so much. That is soooo sick to hear about Heidi and her new calling!! If i had someone like her in my ward I wouldn´t wait to give her a big calling either, she is going to be siiiick!!!! Also, Mom, we just found out about transfers, and I will be staying in Maia for another 6 weeks! So, I have a few requests. I need new toothbrush heads, and Deoderant. And also, I would love a copy of your conversion story! I´ll translate it, dont try and google that…or you can, just for kicks. Im glad to hear that everyone is doing well at home~!!1!!
Sooo, this week in Portugal. We marked Antonio, AGAIN for baptism this past sunday. And!!!!!! He drove up to the church, and i came out and talked to him, and he said thatnk you for your time, and gave us back O Livro de Mórmon, and said that he is Catholic…And I was like, no. You´re a liar. Because he has said several times that he has his own religion. He is crazy, but it feels really good that we dont have to stress over him. But goodness, it just feels bad that we worked so hard for so long, and nothing!…But hey. you cant get them all…Or any in our case. BUT, we are about to start doing work like crazy. The only tough part is that all of the members dont live in our Area, becuase we have 4 Elders in the ward, they ALL live on the other side, so we cant work with them…And that is why we did Over 87 HOURS of tracting last transfer….That is DAYS…..Goodness. So obviously there are better ways to do things….The family of 7 lives waaaay far away, so that is our problem that we are having now, but they said that they really like us, so Vamos Lá.
Kinda funny story, we were knocking one of the billions of doors this week, and found a guy, and I have realized that when they ask US what is the name of God, that means that they are looking to throw down with us JW (TJ in Portugués) style. So we handed it to this guy, and he knew it, but he just kept making excuses, so we just left, but it was a good time. Jehovah is in fact, Jesus Christ.
Also, our bus passes expired, so we walked multiple times from Senhora Da Hora, our address, to MAIA…Google map that… Its long, and it hurts.I really dont have very much to say, but I love Portugal, and You Guys!!!! Just remember that the Church is true and Jesus is our Savior.
Love ya SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!
ELDER NIELSON!!!!!!

Almost 6 Months!

Querida família e amigos!!!
I love you guys.
First story, just because im in the moment, i gave my english book of mormon and bible to a place her to get it covered, and i had a dream that it was gonna come out bad, then i just got here, and on them both it said, “The Church of Jesus Crist of Latter-day Saints”…We are in Portugal, how are you going to spell the name of Jesus Christ wrong….Dream come true.hahha.not
That is sick that Kendra is going to Itália!!!! Bem Vindo para Europa!!!haha. Itilain is pretty sweet!!! Its a lot like spanish…maybe not.. I can just understand, spanish and Italian at about the same level so i dont really know, but its really pretty.
Ok, Antonio wasn´t baptized. Our fault, we didnt prepare him well enough. Im starting to kind of have a different mindset i guess, but i dont really know. People have free agency, and can say no. And the thing is that they are just not prepared. Whose job is it to prepare? Ours, with help fom the lord. If i teach by the spirit, they will feel the necessity, and move their lives, so therefore, if they are not baptized, thy didnt feel the necessity of the spirit, if it wasnt there, and if it wasnt there i didnt bring it, and if i didnt bring it, im wrong. And im learning, and ill be better. The end, welcome to a mission.hahah. We just need to find people thatare really searching for it. Becuase when people have a weird outlook and just want their own God, they wont listen. This prob dont make cents, but it do if ya me, sew sorry.
I sent the SD cards, and Mother and Fathers day gifts, should be there soon! Also goodness, I always talk about my parents(and family and friends) to my friends, and to everyone! You guys are the coolest! You guys are the reason that I am who i am!..A little strange!hhahaha.just kidding i love you!
I have gotten mail. I dont really remember off the top of my head. Uhh, also dang it, i cant think of anything to right, and this keyboard sucks!!!AHHHH!!!H!H!

This week we found this family of 7 people, they are siiick!! We are going to start teaching them this week, and i hope all goes well with that. Also……..i really dont know what to say more, between my books and this keyboard, im pretty distracted right now…………………………I love my mission, im having lots of fun, and i hope that you guys are having the best time in the world!!! Thank you for writing more this week!!!hahaha. ~

It has been really rainy lately, and kinda sad but itl be better soon forr sure. Nest week is trasfers already!!!!!!! Holy Goodness, time is going by soooo fast! And something else crasy, is that im hitting 6 months this WEEK!!!!!!!! WOW!! Almost a quarter of my mission gone by, and i feel like i havent done anything!Goodness!! I feel like this transfer for my has transforemed me a lot, becuase we things go wrong, i cant rely on a senhor companion, i just gotta do it, becuase we are both new, so we aer learning as we go.. Thats what makes it fun.

Once again, I love you all.
Also, DAVID; HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY, i forgot becuaes we dont pay taxes here, and normally thats what we do on your birthday!!hahaha. Love ya doggy!

Walking a Dog and Feeling the Spirit

This week was pretty sweet, we didn’t baptize anybody and we didn’t have ANYBODY at church. So in that sense, it was horrendous. I felt really bad. We had a zone conference as I said, and President Torgan is sooo sick, we had interviews with him, and he just knows the Lord, and the Lord knows us, its the best! I love him! By the way, I dont know if you heard, but he was called as an AREA SEVENTY. My new president is called Pres. Flukiger, or something…haha. Something really cool that happened was that yesterday President Torgan was giving a fireside at the church, and and it was sweet as always! Anyways at the end of it, I was like, we need to go talk to Ana(she is a lady we found walking her dog, and she and her family are from South Africa, and she wants to go to church, and they are just really really hard to get a hold of.) And it was kind of just out of the blue, but I felt it. It was really faint, but I just acted. I started remembering a talk that was given by Elder Bednar about how do I know if its the Spirit or not? and His answer was dont worry about it, if your being a good boy or girl, and trying to do the right thing, sont worry about it. So I didn’t. So we walked really fast, didn’t even take the bus(it was really far) and when we got there we saw her and her husband whom we have never seen before walking their dog. IT WAS SWEET! So we ran up to her and gave her a book of Mormon and we were just like, we know its hard to keep in contact, but you can always read this, and she was siked and it was sweet, and her husband was sick wit it…excuse my hoodrat…It was just a good way to finish a not great day.hahaha. Buut. Something awesome that president Torgan talked about and what I was studying about this morning was about Excuses. Everybody it seems like has one. And it is wayyyyy annoying especially when you plan things around them and it all just drops. Lots of times people make excuses for things that they do wrong, like, oh yeah, I didnt go to that church meeting becuase I was to tired, or I didn´t obey the word of wisdom because of blah blah. No. Thats an excuse. Every time we make an excuse like that, we rob Christ of the Atonement. He died for all of our sins, and an excuse is just a wanna-be atonement to make it seem like we didnt do anything wrong. ALMA 42:29-30. It is soooo sweet.Man up. Goodness the gospel is the bomb! Also, the Sacrament. When people dont take the sacrament, lots of times without even noticing it, we instantly judge them like, oh my gosh that person is such a sinner or whatnot. Again. No, The fact that they have such a respect for a holy ordinance as to not take it unworthily, is 100% the right thing to do, But, those who take the sacrament and judge are just as unworthy……Slap to the face? I don´t know if that is doctrine, but those are my feelings on that.
I LOVE that I am here in Portugal. I Love the people here. I love the gospel, and I love trying to bring others to have the same happiness that I have from it!
Sorry this letter Isnt the sweetest ever, but Im trying to work, and I am loving it. Hopefully this pictures that I send will do!hahahha

Feeding Pigeons to the Cats

Querida Família e Amigos,
Nossa, estou bem fardo de caminando. So this transfer is sweeeeet. We are putting in a lot a lot of work, and we are getting blessed, and thats great. We worjed all week, with more than twenty hours of tracking, and we really didn have much progress. Lots of the people we contacted went out for Easter, and most of the members dont live on our side of the boundry, so we cant get any references. Also we found out that the last Elders here did have any progressing investigators, so we literally had nothing to pick up on…BUT! We kept on trying all day every day, and we were super bumbed out, because we didnt even think we would have anybody in chruch. So the morning of chruch, we left the house at like 8 and went trying to contact anybody on the street to bring them to church, but considering it was early, and we have catholic churches everywhere with Extremely catholic português people going to church, we couldnt get anybody. So we went to church, and Ĩ was in the chapel talking with the other elders investigators, and Elder Brown is like “Elder! (while staring out the window) is that Antonio and Paulo?” And I was like siiiiick, it is! So we ended up having two investigators at chuch who said that they really liked it, and we can go back and visit them. The first time…and only time.. we were at their house we were talking to them and they were like nope we wont ever be members or anything, they were just really rough around the edges, and now, we have an appointment with theim this week. Blessings for sure!!!! I swear, its sweet to know for sure that we will be blessed when we try and trust in the lord. And believe me, we do. I just love this transfer. The four of us just push each other, and its sweet when the others are having sucess, its just great. Sorry this letter is pretty weak too. I cant really express the amout of walking and doors that we knock in words.hahaha. I feel like im at the point with the language where I can be suave with it, and just be normal when I talk with people, and getting them to open up. I have really really been blessed with that. Today for the first time, some lady was suprised that I wasnt português! Good feeling! But yeah its cool here, I love it! Its the Lords work and it will be done in his time.
Funny Story: We have gotten into this hobby and we really like feeding the pigeons and seagulls from outside of our window!!! So it started out with pigeons , then we started throwin tuna to get seagulls, then there came cats trying to eat the pigeons and so we kept trying to feed the pigeons to the cat, but the cat was really slow, so it just kept escalating until….we froze a potato, and helped the cat a little bit……uhhhh what?hahahahahah
I love you guys sooooo much!!!!!! I am soooo thankful for you all seriously. Whenever I am doing things here my friends (you guys) keep popping into my head and its siiick to get reminded of you all! Life is Good.

Maia!

Bom Dia Cara!!!!
Maia is pretty sweet, also they haven´t had baptisms in a while….But yesterday we had one!!!!! Woooooo!!!! His name is Mario, and he is really old, and awesome! We have been working like CRAZY here becuase we are “white-washing” the area, which means that both Elder Brown..my comp. and I are both new here, so we are basically starting all over again. We did 21 hours of tracking last week, and we didn´t even have a full week. My feets hurt. Elder Brown is my new companion, hes sick, we were in the MTC together, he is one transfer ahead of me. Thats crazy that casey is getting surgery, I hope that all goes well. Also, make fun of the Brasilian guy without a visa!!! Just kidding, it kinda sucks when taht happens, but Colorado is siiick to serve in so its a blessing. Just say TUDO BEM?! to him all the time, and it will be just like the MTC.hahahaha. So in Maia we live in a four Elder house, and its just positive energy everywhere, I am so happy all the time becuase I just can worry about the people we are teaching!!!! AHHHHH IT FEELS SO GOOD!!”!!!! A mission is the coolest thing.
Something I learned: I learned that prayers are answered. With all of this walking around in an area that we dont know knocking doors, we really need some help, so one night, we were having some trouble, and we prayed, and said, please help us, we will do everything we can, if you will just lead us to the people, and in about no time, we had already contacted 5 new people, and it just kinda seemed normal, but looking back on it, I didnt get the blessings until I asked, and even then, I promissed that I would do my part. And it WORKED. Its kinda something that you dont really think about in the moment, but when you look back, you can see the Lord´s hands.
Something Funny: We were out tracking, and we were doing a thing called Contatas de Oração, and that is where we just pray with somebody we meet, or knock their door. So we were donig this, and my compa was talking for a little, and this lady was just like in here window, really far away talking to us, and then I stepped in and convinced here to let us pray with her(which isnt a good thing, but it works), and I was like, Ok i´ll say it, and I bow my head, and sniccker a little bit because I realize how rediculous this is that I am about to yell this prayer to this lady, and when I start she goes, “não pode ser, não pode orar se estas a rir” and I was like uhhh….sorry, Im just saying this prayer really loudly, its hard to do. And I ended up saying it, but it was really funny, and probably really bad, but she was kinda crazy to begin with. But It was a great experience.

Another Transfer

Família, e mues amados amigos!!!
Im getting transfered again!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Now im going to a place called Maia…I love Matosinhos soooo much, the aula, the place, the people, and the investigators!!!! I´m not sad to be going to a different place, i´m just sad that i havent gotten the chance, to stay in a ward, and really get to know a place. And now this “once slacker area” has awesome investigators ready for baptism!!! ANd I´m leaving.hahah I´m the Red-headed step-child of Portugal! But! Once again, i´ll do my best wherever I go, and love the people! I hope my best is enough, I still need to learn a lot.haha. I feel like every time I know enough, something happens, and I fall on my face, and realize that I don´t know anything. Elder Justiniano will be training a greenie in Matosinhos, which sounds like the coolest thing ever!!! I was really suprisd when I found out that I would be leaving. Last night, we more or less, set up two people for baptism, and goodness, I love the people!!! AHHHHH!!!! p.s. We have two investigators that speak spanish, so I am having to Hablar Español. y es muy bueno. Mas é mais difícil para falar para mim, só porque, eu não sei as palavras, mas a coisa que e fixe, e que eu posso perceber quando eles estão a falar.
Good news, this week I held a chicken. Also news from the “dream world” I had a dream that I was back home, and our family was all joking around, and everything was normal until I realized that I was supposed to be on a mission. Then I started thinking, why am I here? How did I get here? and stuff like that, and then I pinched myself, and I didnt wake up, and I was running around trying to figure out what happened, and I was really scared, and it was really real, and I didn´t like it at all. Also, I held a starfish! But this really happened.
I am really excited for General Conferencethis week!!!! The lord is gonna speak!!!! It finally was this transfer, when I really realized, and it hit me, that when the prophet speaks, the lord speaks!!! Goodness, thats crazy! Amos3:7. But when it really hits, the significance of that, I can´t believe that I ever slept during it!haha
Sorry about Jessica!, That sucks that your ankle broke in half, and you and to go to the hospital! Thats also sweet sweet ol´beans that Casey got a Hole in One! Siiiiick! His head deserves the coulds for that one.
Also sorry that this e-mail isnt the best or anything like that, my head is spinning around about other things, I promise that next week I will be better! I love you guys!

Not so Bad

Família e Amigãos,
First off, calm down a little bit about the burn, its not that bad. Also, I can handle situations like this by myself, I dont need to get any higher authorities involved. haha. I know that before my mission, I would have already popped, but right now, I have more trust in the lord that everything will be alright. Yes, my butt is fine. ;) ….maybe its a little chubby from all the food, but everything else is good. Also, I didn’t tell that story, or those stories, to tell on people or anything, haha, I just thought they were funny. My chin is up. Things are good now. Patience and love are really the best medicine. Im doing just great Mumsy, but that you for the prayers!
This week was Elder Justiniano´s birthday, so I cooked him breakfast, and bought him a cake. Kill em with kindness. ;) I am still learning a lot. And one thing that Elder Justiniano is good at is studying, and knowing things, so that is something that I am picking up, is more knowledge about the scriptures. And other stuff that happens, I just think of better ways that it can be done, but, trying to stay happy at the same time. Missionary work starts with the companionship…(After the Lord)….so that is something that I recognized, and that I am trying to fix, and its working. This area and the ward here are sweeet, they just need shepherds if you will.haha. And I feel bad that we havent baptized more, but the only solution is to work more, and change things. But things are getting better,so who knows. I found a lot of help in a scripture in Mosiah 24:13-15. Its good.
Brazilians are the sweetest! They are so nice, and they cook sweet food, are happy!!! We went and visited a Brazilian family of investigators, and they were like, “Quer ficar por a churrasquiera?” And I was like, whats that, then I found out, and its a BBQ, and mmmm its good. And they were like, cmon drink and stuff and we were like….no.
Things spiritually, could be better. The family with the kids that we baptized, are going back to a little inactivity, and the oldest boy in the family hoodrat, is mad at us for some reason…I dont know what to do about that, but Im trying. Something that I have learned is that the more you bear your testimony, the more it grows. Something our teaching has been lacking, is testimony.
Also, we did a division this week, and I went over to an area, called Foz de Douro, which is mega slacker area…anyways, the lord touched the hearts of two new investigators, that morning, it was really cool. There is a lot of work to be done, the problem is the workers dont want to work. That area is cool. The Rio Douro, is Beleza!! Speaking of that. There is a RM girl in this ward named Raquel, and she has a business painting/drawing things, and she made shoes for me that are sweet, and have some place from Portugal on them! Can´t wait to use them!…in two years!hahah.
I love you guys soooooo much, every single one of you!!! Don´t worry about me, a good sister of mine once said, that nothing is worth having if you dont have to work hard for it. I love my mission. I love my companion. I love the People. I love you guys. And I love the lord, with all my might, mind and strength. First commandment. Second commandment. Im working on. ;) Just kidding!!but seriously…a little.hahahah. I hope that you guys never feel sad, and every day rejoyce, becuase you should, and your alive.!!! Amen Brotha!

Com um Grande Amor!!!!!!

Hoodrats

Minha Família, e meus amados Irmãos,
I swear, goodness goodness nossa . I dont even know where to start. Let´ start with you guys. That is sweet beans that Brotha Ipson is gonna be Bishop Ipson!! Also yeah with problems in missionary work…Let´s just say that after this transfer I will be well prepared for marriage…If I marry a aand Im just gonna stop there becasue sometimes when you write out anger, it sticks longer. But really, I am learning a lot, definately a learning experience. I just feel like poop everyday. :) Just kidding, but seriously. Ok Ok done with that, sorry. Thats cool that you are getting a new oven because the old one exploded.
Ohhh, so something I didnt already say about Portugal is that there are three teams, Benfica, Sporting, and Porto. Sou de Benfica. Everywhere you go people ask you what team you are for, its kinda funny, especially becasue everyone up here is a Portista, and im the only Benficista. But, yeah just thought I would explain that. Also Casey you need to read up and choose one of those teams so I can send you cool stuff. So I brought my journal this week becuase funny things happened.
Something I learned: Patience, even if everything is against you, and you feel like your head is going to explode, and you want to die and everything is just the worst. Dont… D&C Seção 121 starting with 7.
Something funny(becuase this is the only reason anybody reads my letters.haha): Story #1. I washed my whites with my darks and lets just say my “whites” are now darks.haha. Story #2. So we were talking with the hoodrats.hahaha, sorry I probably shouldnt say that, the guys that do drugs in that bairro(neighborhood) and they were trying to sell us a jacket that said Yankees, and they were like cmon cmon buy it buy it, then they lookd at me and were like buy this and I was like…This is probably better with dialog. For the record, the guys talking to me the whole time is talking with the “as a matter of fact” voice inflection
HR-Buy this
Me-No sorry man I dont like the Yankees
HR-Well I dont like you.
Me-What?!?(hahahahah)
HR-I dont like you becuase you dont like gangsters
and at this point I was really confused, becuase they were all getting riled up
Me-I didnt even say anything close to that
HR#2-Youre not a gangster!
Me- I dont even know whats going on~
So at this point my comp steps in and is like, he said he doesnt like the Yankees, not that he doesnt like Gangsters. And things got a little calmer, becuase apparently thats what they thought I said.
HR- Yeah man, its becuase you dont speak Português very well, thats why we had this arguement thing.
Me- (In my head…Both of those words are English ya big dummy! You just dont speak English)
So that was also a funny story.
Story #3. Elder Justiano was playing around with the Iron, and burned my butt. And it hurts. Bad. Thats not really a big story, so Ill tell a longer one. We were walking by the church, and this older guy drives up on the other side of the road making kissing noises(this gay, sorry guy, looks like the guy off of David Letterman who playes the piano, or Elton John) Then he starts waving his hands in a bird flapping motion, and says “Flay Away” all weird like. Then I just looked at him, half angry, half puzzeled, an he was like…in a bad accent…your from america? and I nodded my head then he drives away slowly going “mmm, well, well, well, well” It all felt like a dream, I can´t even say. It was weird.
As for pictures, I will try and send more. I have some bomb pictures, Matosinhos is Beleza!
Sorry I didnt talk very much about missionary work this time, you really dont want to hear what I have to say about that. But I love Matosinhos, and I love the People here, and the Ward is sweet.
Oh, when is Mothers Day, becuase here is is different, like Fathers day is in the Next few weeks or something, so lemme know about that. Also, no I still havent gotten any mail. We only get it if we go to the office, and seeing as I am on the other side of the country…:(. Its funny how the times when ithey would be the best, ya cant have them. But whateves, Vida, e o não e.
Anyways, I love you guys soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much, I hope that everything there is just the best ever, and I hope it wwarms up for ya. Always praying for you.
Com um Grande Amor,
Elder Nielson

Nossa, Nossa assim você me-mata

Família e amigos,
You guys are still the best. So the subjest of this letter ^^ are lyrics from a português song, that apparently has been translated into every language, and is like number 1 or something. Crazy right? and I can understand!haha But in other news. Sorry that I havent been sending pictures, but we are using the computers in an internet café and you can´t do pictures, and that is really sad becuase Matosinhos is really beautiful. For the most part. Also it would be nice to send pictures of the baptisms that we had this week. ;) We baptized two kids this week ages 8 and 10, and the Mom was inactive. We went over there and have been working with them for a while, and the Mom hasnt been to church in likie 20 years or something, but now! She has been going to church and is getting reactivated, and it is sweet!! Reactication and baptism are things that are really cool to be a part of. She has an older son who is all drugged and sorts of stuff, and really that whole neigborhood is dangerous, but we are friends with all of the “bad guys” so that is really funny, but yeah, hopefully we are preventing the kids from following the same example of everybody around them. But yeah, this week has been pretty good, still having companionship problems, but I dont really wanna go there, so yeah, everything is fine..That quote from Elder Holland was awesome Mom, Thanks so much!
I dont know, most of the stuff that is happening here, I dont really want to talk about, and I dont know, just gotta perserverar até o fim…or Endure to the End. Sorry at first I forgot how to say it. I think the thing that I am struggling most with is that I don´t feel good enough. I try to work hard, but I don´t know enough because I am new to the area, new at being a missionary, and new with the language, so I want to say every day that I tried my hardest, but I can say that becuase I always feel like I didn´t do enough. I dont know, I dont know how to phrase it, and I dont want to complain, so the bottom line is, Im in the right place, I just need to do the right thing, once I find out what that thing is. Also, I am learning a lot about patience.
Funny story, we had a Zone meeting, and on our way there we took the wrong train, and ended up like in Spain, and were an hour and a half late.
Also another thing that I learned, is that getting along with a person, and working with a person are two completely different things….Holy goodness.
Also, yes I realize that my letters are written badly.
Also when I get home(in an eternity), we need to go to Brazilian restaraunts. Com Certeza! São Boas!!
Also I´m glad that you liked Dads Birthday package, the Fado CD´s were made by a member in my first area. Yoiu´ll notice that most fado sounds the same ;) , haha just kidding, but seroiously, but I really like it.
Sorry I dont have more to say, I with try to fanagle a way to send pictures today! I love you guys more than Português people like to have moustaches!
Com Muito Muito Amor,
Elder Nielson
